Description:
For true peace on the islands it’s hard to beat Shaw Island County Park on the least visited of the four ferry-served islands. Also called South Bay State Park on some maps, this protected beach not only offers plenty of beachcombing opportunities but some of the most peaceful and picturesque campsites on all the islands. Best yet, even in the heart of the tourist-mad San Juans summers, there’s hardly anyone else around.

Twelve campsites affording mucho privacy are tucked into the trees overlooking placid Indian Cove. The soothing sound of tidewater gently lapping at the shore ensures some of the all-time best nights of sleep you’ll ever experience.

South Beach was made for beachcombing and depending on the tide, tide pools offer hours of fun exploration. Toddlers, with their insatiable curiosity, are especially in heaven here. (Be sure to respect the signs that indicate private property at either end of the beach.) In summers, the Cove’s shallow water is warmed to the point that wading, and even a full body dip, are good ideas.

With a pavilion, swings, picnic tables, and large lawn perfect for tossing a Frisbee, Shaw Island County Park makes for a worthwhile day-use park. Small boats are available for rent also. Because Shaw is a mostly flat island, biking here is a great idea.

While it’s true that there’s not much on Shaw Island, as this county park proves, what is here is loaded with peace and quiet.
