Description:
On the Northwest corner of San Juan Island lays Roche Harbor, a privately owned resort that caters mainly to boaters and sport fishermen traveling the San Juans. One of the many establishments hosted on the extensive grounds of this bourgeoisie playground is the harborside Madrona Grill.

The grill shares its white and green color scheme and neo-French architectural style with the rest of the buildings on the grounds. Light jazz music in the background doesn’t discourage the New Orleans theme-park atmosphere. Seating is plentiful inside and on the expansive deck to accommodate the gaggles of weekend mariners and their offspring. The restaurant overhangs the edge of the harbor, offering patrons the opportunity to watch the tourists struggling in and out of their boats.

The crowd here is definitely yacht club, complete with captain’s hats, pipes, cell phones and leopard skin bags. The restaurant teems with life despite the many distractions of the resort, a testament to the drawing power of the grill. Patrons are no doubt drawn by the astounding selection of "foo-foo" drinks, wild tropical concoctions that would make any Miamian feel right at home.

Thankfully, the Madrona doesn’t rest on its laurels when it comes to the food. The menu offers a wide variety of local seafood, including dishes like Manilla Clams with Pesto and Dungeness Crab Bisque. The clams that this reviewer tried were excellent: tender, tasty and fresh. The grill loyally adheres to the surf n’ turf tradition by offering meat-eaters classic options such as Prime Rib and BBQ ribs. For those of you who just stepped off a long cruise from the Caribbean, the grill also offers their version of the legendary "cheeseburger in paradise", a la Jimmy Buffet.
