Herb's Tavern is on the corner of Spring and First streets, one block up from the ferry landing on the right. Description: Looking for a real island experience? Visit Herb’s Tavern; this place is about as real as it gets. Established in 1938, Herb’s is an island institution. Customers include everyone from local fishermen to movie stars--Sandra Bullock threw a party here during the filming of "Practical Magic." Herb’s looks like a no-frills tavern ought to: worn linoleum, paneled ceiling, not to mention the numerous beer signs, fish replicas, turn-of-the-century (time before last) photos of Friday Harbor, and other island memorabilia hanging on its walls. Cue sticks smack pocket balls home while Stevie Ray Vaughn wails from the jukebox. More than a few islanders consider Herb’s burgers the best in town, if not the largest. Eat the Monster Burger--two 1/2 lb. beef patties, Canadian bacon, Swiss and Cheddar cheese--and you get a free brew. You’re going to need it to wash that one down. Other burger choices include Mushroom, with grilled mushrooms, onions, and Swiss cheese; and the Cajun Burger, 1/2-lb. beef patty with Cajun seasonings and melted cheese. For burger lovers of a different stripe, Herb’s serves the meatless Garden Burger and several types of chicken burgers. I recommend the Locals’ Favorite, which features boneless chicken breast, Swiss cheese, and grilled onions--quite tasty. Cold sandwiches and kosher beef hot dogs are available, as well as seafood baskets: fried clams, shrimp, calamari, and halibut. Pizzas, made from scratch, are also served; allow at least twenty minutes for your order. Herb’s keeps about twenty different beers on tap, from domestics to micro-brewed ales and stouts plus numerous bottled brands. With a week’s notice, they will have a keg of your favorite brew ready to roll. Entertainment includes winter pool tournaments, occasional karaoke nights, and live blues, reggae, and rock bands. Give Herb’s a call for the upcoming music calendar. Written By: Madelyn Altman Map In This Category
