From the corner of First and Spring streets, turn right onto First, then right again on West Street. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of Friday Harbor House Inn.

Description:
You’ll begin to relax the moment you step into this sleek dining room with its gorgeous harbor view. Watch the ferry soundlessly float around the bend while swallows dip and swirl against a twilight sky. (Get a window table if possible but don’t fret if it doesn’t work out; your dining experience will be enjoyable, no matter.) The slate floor, honey-colored woods, soft lighting, and recorded mellow jazz help make Friday Harbor House the most casually sophisticated restaurant in town.

A small sofa and crackling fireplace centrally divide the room, creating intimate dining areas on either side. Enjoy a drink in front of the fire or, weather permitting, at a bistro table on the patio.

Service is friendly and attentive. You’ll appreciate the small touches both beautiful (candlelight, potted orchids) and considerate (each table is set with pepper grinder and carafe of filtered drinking water). The wine and spirits list is extensive with fine imported and domestic vintages, including a few from Lopez Island Winery. Malt beverages and hard cider are available, plus a full bar of premium liquors for your favorite cocktail.

Friday Harbor House award-winning executive chef is Thomas Ward, create seasonal menus inspired by the bountiful produce of small island farms, old-growth fruit orchards, local shellfish, and organically raised chicken and lamb. Even the coffee, from San Juan Roasting Company, is roasted on the island.

The emphasis is on freshness and flavor at Friday Harbor House. Consider, for example, Fresh Dungeness Crabcakes: two rounded scoops of sweet crab chunks, with bits of red bell pepper, onion, and fresh bread crumbs, sautéed in butter and served with a fabulous coconut-green curry aioli. Or a vegetarian entrée of Linguine with Salsa di Noci, a creamy walnut sauce with local goat cheese and seared winter greens. Meat lovers will savor Grilled Filet of Beef Tenderloin topped with balsamic vinegar and cracked peppercorn mustard.

For a sweet finale, try Chocolate Dependance Truffle Torte, floating in a pool of créme anglaise and topped with whipped cream. It’s smooth, dark and rich as can be; true chocoholic heaven!

An evening at Friday Harbor House restaurant is an expensive one. It helps that complimentary buttered noodles are served to children and that they may order half portions from the menu at half cost. Reservations are strongly suggested in the warmer months and on weekends.

Comments
There's a new chef, but this is still a superb restaurant. The above review is accurate. As for being expensive: there are at least three other restaurants on the island that are as expensive or more so, and none of them compare to Friday Harbor House. This is the "real thing," and it's worth your money.
