The Blue Dolphin Cafe is at the corner of A and First streets at the top of the ferry lanes. Description: If you find yourself waiting for the early morning ferry, do what the locals do. Leave your car in line--be sure to return to your vehicle 20 minutes before sailing time--and walk a half-block up the hill to the Blue Dolphin Cafe. Located on the corner of First and A streets, this no-frills little eatery opens its doors at 5 am every day except Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter. In addition to coffee and espresso drinks, you’ll have a full breakfast menu to choose from offering everything from Eggs Benedict to Snoqualmie Falls Oatmeal. My husband loves their famous Friday Harbor Omelet with mushrooms, spinach, garlic, and cheese. Dedicated carnivores will enjoy the Meat Lovers Omelet: cheese, ham, bacon, sausage, and hamburger. For a twist on an American breakfast standard, the Blue Dolphin has created Special Hashbrowns made with a choice of shredded or homestyle potatoes, mushrooms, bell peppers, onion, diced ham, plus melted cheddar and Jack cheeses. Buttermilk pancakes, French toast, and waffles will get you off to a sweet start. (Try Olivia’s Waffle topped with whipped cream and strawberries.) The Blue Dolphin also serves lunch, primarily burgers and sandwiches. Their hamburger, a hefty half-pounder, is served with either homemade potato salad or fries. Other lunch choices include their Philly Steak Sandwich, made with beef or chicken; Rueben, and BLT. Lighter fare is also an option: choose from the Gardenburger, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, or cold sandwiches with either turkey, ham, or roast beef on your choice of breads. While you are waiting for your order, check out the surrounding sea life wall mural. You may notice a startling resemblance between the caricature faces of the sea creatures and some of the local folks sitting around you. The previous owner commissioned the painting as a humorous tribute to her regular customers. Although the restaurant recently changed hands, new owner Greg Daniels intends to preserve the unique artwork. The Blue Dolphin menu items are moderately priced. Breakfast is served all day.
