From the Orcas ferry terminal, take the Horseshoe Highway and follow the signs to Eastsound. From Eastsound, take North Beach Road past the museum and take a left on A Street.

Description:

There’s something to be said for a restaurant where local law enforcement officers eat. What it says, I’m not exactly sure, but such is the case at Portofino Pizzeria on Orcas Island. Dollar bills have been mysteriously tacked to the ceiling. You might wonder why. Though there are many mysteries at Portofino Pizzeria, you know the pizza is going to be good the minute you walk in and get a whiff of roasted garlic and notice that the restaurant is crowded.

Portofino offers two kinds of crust--Naples, a thick crust, or Romano, a thin crust. Pizza is available to take out, eat in, or "take and bake." Pizza by the slice is also an option. The menu proudly states that the pizza is created by "our chef from Venice--California, that is." The atmosphere is very casual. Diners grab their own menus, napkins, and silverware as they walk in. This is the kind of place where you will feel comfortable after biking all day around the island. The walls are hand-painted in pastel colors of Portofino, the Italian coastal town and inspiration for the restaurant’s name. Like Portofino, the town, Portofino the restaurant offers its own view of the water from the outdoor patio.

The pizza is hearty and flavorful. Even a small pizza is filling with toppings so thick. There are 11 different kinds of pizza, from the Traditional--with a blend of mozzarella, jack, provolone and cheddar cheeses--to the San Marino, which includes cheese, shrimp, tomatoes, garlic, red onions, basil, cheese and either olive oil or marinara sauce. Portofino also has a do-it-yourself salad bar and do-it-yourself soda machine. Beer is available on tap, as well as red and white wine. The owner has created a Website that offers the complete menu as well as the chef’s special.

Hands down this is the best place to get the best pizza! Whenever my wife and I get the chance to spend time on Orcas we always come in for lunch. We've been doing so since our honeymoon in 1994.

The dollars on the ceiling are donated by customers, who generally write something on them-a memory of the island or something of the sort. When the ceiling is full, the dollars are taken down and counted. Portofino's mathces that amount, and the money is given as a scholarship to a local graduate.

Great place to eat! I stop in 1-2 times each month when I fly to Orcas Island. Mainland prices and the view is the best in Eastsound.
