In Eastsound, go North on North Beach Road less than a mile from the gas station and you will see it on your right. Description: With its arched entrance of trees and flowers, a string of colorful jalepeno shaped lights, and a brick pathway leading to the door, Bilbo’s Festivo Mexican Restaurant stands out amongst the many shops in Eastsound. The atmosphere here is festive and there is usually a crowd gathered outside waiting for a table, so reservations are recommended. On one lonely Monday night, the dinner reservation book filled up within the first 10 minutes of opening.
Diners can sit outside in the courtyard beneath lush foliage and umbrellas or in the restaurant, which is decorated with pale colored stucco walls and Mexican tile. Locals’ willingness to dine at a particular restaurant is usually a good clue about the quality of food. On this particular night, the majority of patrons were known by name to the waitress. The restaurant opened for business in 1974 in a small building that looked like something from the book, The Hobbit. Hence the name, Bilbo’s - a reference to the book. The menu includes a wide variety of choices including mesquite-grilled entrees, a menu for ninos, and three different kinds of sauce to top your enchilada or burrito. One can try the Sencilla sauce, a red fresh-roasted tomato sauce or perhaps opt for the green Verde sauce. If indecisive, go for the Christmas Burrito, which has a combination of both sauces. One nice touch is the choice of either corn or flour tortillas. Daily specials are also popular, such as the New York Steak or Crab Enchiladas. Bilbo’s offers atmosphere in addition to tasty food and does not skimp on the bar menu. Sangria, a traditional wine with fruit is available. Bilbo’s also has 13 kinds of tequila and several microbrews. In summer, look for Bilbo’s Taqueria stand out front with a limited menu for lunch. With so many things going for it, it’s no wonder that Bilbo’s has been around for 26 years. Written By: Diana Wurn In This Category
