Description:
Those with an affinity for wine tasting might just lose control -- even push each other out of the way -- to get to the wonderful little tastes of wine available at Lopez Winery. For only $2, one can tickle their taste buds with seven different kinds of wine. The tiny tastes are arranged from the whitest dry wine to a raspberry dessert wine.

The dry Madeleine Angevine has hints of grapefruit and is made with grapes from northern France that are grown on Lopez Island. The Siegerrebe is a wine made with a grape related to the Gewurztraminer and is also produced on the island. There are nice favorites like the Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot, and Merlot. The Apple-Pear wine and the Raspberry dessert wine are a special treat. The Apple-Pear can be served with fresh fruit and cheese, and the Raspberry wine goes best with lots of chocolate, thankfully sold at the winery.

While sampling the wines, tasters can learn about winemaking and the winery’s history from information on the walls. The family-owned operation started 13 years ago and is now considered one of the finest wineries in the region. A photo album on the counter shows the family stomping grapes to accordion accompaniment one season when the equipment broke down. Lopez Island Winery recently joined four other vineyard and winery owners to apply to the federal government to establish their own viticultural area, now known as the Puget Sound Appellation.

Outdoor seating allows visitors to enjoy fresh air and an arbor while discussing the various wines. Wine glasses, and of course bottles of wine, are sold in the tasting room and comprise the necessities for a winery picnic. Lopez Island Winery is open April through mid-December.
