Vic's Drive-In
Admit it. Sometimes, even while vacationing in the jewel-like San Juan Islands, you occasionally find yourself in the mood for fast food. While (thankfully), none of the national franchises are to be found anywhere, Vic’s Driftwood Drive Inn fits the bill nicely while supplying a healthy dose of local atmosphere.

Good, solid inexpensive burgers, fries, and shakes, they’re all here along with food you’d never see at McDonald’s. Among the items on Vic’s wall-mounted menu: halibut, codfish and scallop dinners; Hawaiian and Mexican burgers; burritos and tacos, and a wide assortment of breakfast offerings including pancakes, French toast and omelets. The eatery doesn’t skimp on desserts either and offers a dizzying variety of milkshakes and sundaes.

Service, like the décor at Vic’s, is about as simple as it gets. Order at the counter, then grab a both and listen for your name. Non-smokers beware: puffing is allowed in the front of the restaurant so you might want to sit in the back.

That Vic’s is closed on Sunday and shuts down early on Saturday afternoons suggests that the owners aren’t exactly catering to the tourist crowd. It’s the place where those who build, paint and repair San Juan Island go to eat. That Vic’s is also usually packed further suggests that the locals know a good thing when they’ve got one.

From the ferry landing, bear right and take your first left onto Spring Street. Continue for two blocks to Second Street and turn right. Vic's is about two blocks ahead on the left.
