Review

The Mountain Lake trail, which is a little shy of four miles, is one of the most popular trails in Moran State Park. Not only is there very little elevation gain, but the sights are among the best. The best direction to hike the loop is to start across from the cabin and hike counter-clockwise. In this way you won’t have to hike up the switchbacks on the opposite side of the lake.

Just after the start, you’ll come to a dam which makes a great picnic area. As you hike around the back of the lake, you proceed down a series of switchbacks which offer sweeping views up toward Mount Constitution. At the north end of the lake follow the signs for the Twin Lakes Trail which heads north. This is a great two- to three-mile hike, depending on if you hike around one or both of these small lakes. There are a few hills and boggy areas to cross, but the pristine views of the lakes is worth it.

As you return to Mountain lake, through old growth cedars that tower to the forest’s canopy, stop for a moment. Lean back on one of the many fallen trees and look for a kingfisher waiting for his dinner of trout. The view looking south with the sun glinting off the rippling water makes a great "Kodak Moment." It’s now an easy mile hike back to the parking lot.

Directions

From the Orcas Ferry Landing, follow the main road around the island for about 14 miles to Moran State Park. Just past Cascade Lake, turn left and follow the sign for Mount Constitution. A little more than a mile farther, take a right at the sign for Mountain Lake. The parking lot is about a quarter-mile ahead.
