Review

Since 1985, Bill and Susan Fletcher have operated the Turtleback Farm Inn, an 80-acre pastoral paradise in Crow Valley, on Orcas Island’s western lobe. The Fletchers have won numerous awards through the years, and the Turtleback has been written up in Travel & Leisure, Country Living, and Gourmet magazines. It was even selected one of the 12 most romantic spots in the United States by the Los Angeles Times’ travel editor. The Turtle Back’s farmhouse, and the newly opened Orchard House, provides 11 suites of country comfort and pampering.

Arriving in the afternoon, we entered the hallway of the beautifully preserved farmhouse with its flowered wallpaper and polished wood floors. The new innkeepers, Richard and his wife Joey, greet us with a plate of fresh-baked cookies.

Upstairs, our bedroom overlooked the peaceful farmlands where Bill and Susan raise sheep, cattle and chickens. After unpacking bags and admiring the room and bath, we spoke briefly with Bill Fletcher, who set us off on a walk around the farm where we strolled through a grove of fir and alders. We crossed a wooden bridge to the pond, passed through the farm gate where we met some farmyard residents (including some chickens and a Scotch Highland cow), and back to the Inn. We ambled over to the new addition, the Orchard House, where four large suites with king-sized beds and private decks await visitors.

A decanter of sherry and other refreshments are provided for guests, and sofa and chairs in front of a comfy fire are ready to enjoy. In the morning, breakfast awaits in the farmhouse dining room, with French doors opening out to outdoor tables and the tableau of the morning sun over Crow Valley.

As you marvel at the exquisite upkeep throughout, with fresh and fluffy white towels, new paint, and screened windows, accompanied by the luxury of traditional features such as the claw foot bathtubs, pedestal sinks, and open-beam ceilings, it is no wonder that the Turtleback Farm Inn is popular year-round for weddings, reunions, and other special events.
