Built in 1907, the Kangaroo House Bed and Breakfast is the oldest, continuously operating Bed and Breakfast on Orcas Island. Owners Jill and Charles get a kick out of relating how the B&B got its name. In the 1930s, the home was purchased by Captain Harold Ferris, a steamship captain who’d brought a little kangaroo from Australia with him named Josie. The Allens have maintained the kangaroo theme by decorating the house with an abundance of kangaroo paraphernalia.

The Kangaroo House is a cozy relaxed place with big Craftsman style furniture that makes you want to curl up by the stone fireplace. Helen and Peter, who’s a native Australian, provide a homey atmosphere and will often entertain guests with tales from their 28 years working for the National Park Service. The Allens have taken into consideration many kinds of guests, from those couples on a romantic getaway to families who need to keep children entertained. As a result, there seems to be something nice for everyone.

A little room with games, puzzles, and books -- from Cat in the Hat to Shakespeare—offers entertainment for families and groups, while the secluded garden hot tub provides private relaxation. A helpful notebook provides menus for local restaurants and includes a section for guest comments, which can be helpful. Some children have provided extremely honest critiques of the food around town.

Two suites and three rooms, all with private baths, offer a range of rates and configurations for parties of different sizes. The rates are reasonable and Helen, who’s won awards for her breakfasts in B&B cooking contests, provides a hearty meal to start the day.

This is a great place to hang out and relax. My husband and I were exhausted after publishing and marketing our first book on stained glass restoration - yea!. My mother gave us a gift certificate to Kangaroo House. She knew I had always wanted to go the San Juans and found them online. We spent 2 days on San Juan Island and 2 on Orcas. San Juan had mores shops but Orcas was prettier. The restaurants on Orcas were also superb, especially this little tiny window off an alley called the kitchen with picnic tables to eat on, fresh healthy and cheap (relatively). If you are not the kind of people who have to be entertained constantly and enjoy nature, the San Juans are heaven. We also found quite a few really interesting people who moved to the islands seeking either a great place to farm, cook, write, or otherwise do their art or possibly to escape commercialism. Our hosts Jill and Carl? were awesome. They also had creative interests we enjoyed talking about and they let you feel like a resident and not a temporary guest. We felt right at home and totally enjoyed our bed and breakfasts.
