Laid-back Lopez Island (often referred to as "Slopez") is the San Juans' kind-of island. It's kind of like Orcas Island in that it has a small village yet it's kind of like Shaw Island in that it offers big-time opportunities for peace and quiet.
Popular with bicyclists because of its miles of mostly flat roadways, Lopez also offers a variety of Bed & Breakfasts, parks, campgrounds, and resorts. Find cafes, restaurants and a few galleries at Lopez Village, along with a cultural center that opened in 1999.
No description of Lopez Island would be complete without mention of "the wave". As long as anyone can remember, drivers on Lopez have been waving at other drivers whenever they pass by. It's friendly, it's fun, and it's a way for residents to show they take seriously the unofficial title as the San Juans' friendliest island.
