One might think that authentic Italian food would be hard to come by in a tourist-driven town like Friday Harbor but that simply isn’t the case. The atmosphere is certainly the San Juans, but Bella Luna offers fantastic dishes that would compare with your favorite Italian restaurant anywhere.

The restaurant presents itself as fine dining: wooden chairs and glass top tables with ornate crystal bottles of olive oil grace the main dining area. Patrons are greeted by a bust of some unidentified Roman deity, a hint at the tapestries, cornucopias, grape vines and antique bookcases within. This is all in striking contrast to the area behind the bar with the black light aquarium and overhead television showing extreme sports. Another mystery of the San Juans dining experience, but not something you ponder long when the food arrives.

And oh my, what food. Fresh bread with olive oil and minced garlic spread started things off with a unique and classy touch. The fresh tossed salad and light, subtle vinaigrette were also of distinctive quality. All of these signs bode well for the main dishes, which did not disappoint. I’ve never been to Italy myself but I’m confident that the Spaghetti Carbonara with Prosciutto would impress just about anyone with a discriminating taste for pasta. The Lasagna comes with a hearty red tomato sauce and the Italian sausage tastes as if they made it right there on the spot. Dinner portions are large enough for two, so bring a Roman appetite to the table. Other authentic dishes available include Veal Parmesan and Chicken Marsala, a menu that would make Vito Corleone proud.

Head up Spring Street two blocks from the Ferry and turn left. The restaurant is on the right on the first block.
