Review

Backdoor Kitchen and Catering is new to Friday Harbor, an interesting little place tucked behind the large industrial building that dominates the freight yard. Open the metal backdoor, go through the Dutch door on your right, and you’re at the counter. The food is primarily take-out, though there are a couple of tables outside. The yard looks a bit rough but it is a work in progress. A bluestone patio and teak outdoor furniture will be in place for warm weather seating.

Don’t let the restaurant's size dissuade you. This tiny kitchen puts out a remarkable variety of multi-ethnic soups, salads, and entrées. Organic, naturally leavened breads are baked daily, as well as generously sized homemade cookies.

The Backdoor Kitchen’s chef/owners are a brother and sister team with an obvious appreciation of international cuisine. Their eclectic menu includes Nori Hand Rolls with smoked salmon, shiitake mushrooms, and spinach, Tamales with roasted chili, corn, and sharp cheddar, Cashew Chicken Salad Sandwich on homemade focaccia, Guatemalan Black Beans and Rice Plate, Southern-Style Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich, and the quite popular Vietnamese Rice-Noodle Bowl. This creation is a wonderful mix of rice noodles, fried shallots, chopped cilantro, cucumber, romaine, carrots, and peanuts, garnished with jalapeño and dressed with nuoc cham, a Vietnamese mixture of lime juice, palm sugar, chilies, and fish sauce. This noodle dish is served with pork, tofu, or sautéed red snapper. Check the blackboard for homemade soups and Curry of the Day, which may be a Thai, Indian, or Moroccan spiced dish.

Children in tow? No problem, even if they’re not feeling particularly adventuresome. Youngsters can be accommodated with that old favorite, a peanut butter, jam, and homemade bread sandwich.

To expedite service, phone your order in advance, if possible. Catering and special orders are welcome.
