Hidden away on a private road in the San Juan Island countryside, there lies the perfect place for peace and serenity. In a pastoral setting at the edge of a forest two miles outside Friday Harbor, Halvorsen House boasts four rooms guaranteed to offer a home away from home experience.

Two of the rooms in this well-appointed country-style home are actually suites. The Ivy Apartment offers a spacious living room and full-size kitchen making it a smart choice for families or small groups. Suite Suzanne is for honeymooners or those with a romantic bent. A separate entrance ensures privacy and the soothing jets of the large Jacuzzi tub promise relaxation. Suite Suzanne has a kitchen also. Suite Dreams and Misty Rose complete the Halvorsen’s charming room offerings.

As its name implies, the Gathering Room is a place where guests can share a relaxing evening or pass the time taking advantage of the Halvorsen’s wide selection of games, books or videos. In winters, owner Donna Maloney fires up the fireplace adding to the B&B’s cozy atmosphere. Guests are free also to roam the home’s 5-1/2 acres, and lightly traveled and mostly wooded Halvorsen Road makes for pleasant after dinner walking.

For breakfast, Donna succeeds in her mission to make sure that no one goes hungry. She offers a wide-ranging menu that includes stuffed pancakes, homemade oatmeal and granola, fresh fruit, strawberries and cream crepes and much more. All are delicious. And finally, for that true home away from home touch, guests are welcome to help themselves to the living room cookie jar that’s stuffed with homemade chocolate chip cookies.

From Friday Harbor head northwest for about 2 miles on Roche Harbor Road. Turn left on Halvorsen Road. The Halvorsen House is the first house on the right, about a half-mile ahead.
