The 1950s sign on top of Doty’s Bakery reads "A-1 Drive In/GOOD FOOD" but don’t be misled. The "GOOD FOOD" part is true but this is no burger-and-milkshake teenage hangout. The handwritten sign on the door says "Great Breakfast all day" and they mean it. This is good old American-down-home, no-nonsense cooking for the locals and the tourists with enough sense to try it.

Cozy and familiar, Doty’s interior offers a few wood benches that are well-worn from constant use. However, most of the building is dedicated to the bakery and the grill, operated by motherly types frying up every variation of eggs, potatoes and meat known to man.

The depth and breadth of the menu is beyond the comprehension of most ordinary humans. The bakery lives up to its name with a full range of pastries including butterhorns and cinnamon rolls. (Had a pecan roll lately?) If you can make it past these sugary delights, you’ll be faced with the choice of eggs, hotcakes, hash, burgers, seafood, and the list goes on.

Keep in mind that this is not some pretentious tourist spot that caters to the wine and cheese crowd. The patrons pay cash and don’t give a damn what the neighbors say. The local dress code is in full effect with overalls, tattered flannel, long beards and battered hats. Diners are responsible for getting their own silverware and condiments from the grill counter. You’d better pick up after yourself or you’ll be sent back to bus your table. Service is familiar, if not gruff.

But hey, that’s what American-down-home-no-nonsense cooking is all about, isn’t it?

From the Orcas Island ferry terminal get on the Horseshoe Highway and drive about 10 miles to the town of Eastsound. Turn left onto North Beach Road, Eastsound's main drag. Look for the A-1 GOOD FOOD sign just ahead on the right.
