Review

Eastsound on Orcas Island has many fancy, inventive and trendy eating establishments. The Lower Tavern isn’t one of them. What it lacks in frills, it makes up for in delicious satisfying food, local brews, and large screen TVs perfect for watching your favorite sports. The simple casual setting that it provides makes it a relaxing retreat from hectic activities and the place where locals congregate to catch up on the news of the day.

Finding a burger let alone a good burger on Orcas can be a bit of a search so the Lower Tavern’s claim to having the best on the island makes it a challenge worth tasting for yourself. While most patrons will agree they’re the best burgers found locally; many also consider them outstanding compared to any they’ve had whether on or off island. Don’t feel limited to burgers; there are plenty of other choices of pub style food including the soups, salads and hot and cold sandwiches that you might expect as well as additional pleasant surprises.

Another nice benefit of visiting the tavern is the wide selection of local brews (including seasonal ciders and meads) from Orcas and other islands of the San Juan’s. Some of these brands and styles are difficult if not impossible to find elsewhere so it’s a good idea to do some sampling while you have the chance.

This is a local tavern and one of the weekly highlights is open mike night when there’s no telling who’ll show up and provide the entertainment. Throughout the year, live performances and special events will also appear so checking on current happenings when you’re on-island can be useful.

During inclement weather the tavern is a comfortable place to sit indoors and plan for the future. When the sun’s out and you don’t want to miss a moment of being outside, enjoy the open air patio. Not outdoors enough? They’ll gladly pack your order as a takeout. Pick it up and walk down to Beach Park or over to the lawn next to the museum and outdoor stage. For lake and forest picnic sites, drive down to Moran State Park only 10 or 15 minutes away. Since this is a tavern and you have to be 21 or older to enter, takeout is a great option for those with children.

Arriving early on a weekday evening, enjoy the happy hour. Coming in on a late ferry; no problem. The kitchen remains open till closing so this is one of the few places on Orcas where you can get a late night bite to eat. Good food, economical, open late, casual and entertaining all contribute to make your visit both easy and satisfying. Whether you’re a lifetime Orcas resident or a weekend visitor, the Lower Tavern of Eastsound may very well become (if it isn’t already) your favorite neighborhood pub.
