Smuggler's Villa Resort
San Juan County
54 Hunt Street
Located at the northernmost tip of Orcas Island, Smuggler’s Villa Resort looks directly across President Channel to Sucia, Matia and Patos Islands. On clear days, guests at this four-condo resort can admire views of Canadia’s Gulf Islands to the west and Bellingham to the east.
The unpretentious accommodations feel like someone’s home, and in fact they are. Each of these two-bedroom condos is owned and rented out by a different family. Guests shouldn’t be surprised to find sugar and flour bowls filled up and ready for cooking. The cupboards are lined with every utensil you could possibly need to cook a meal for a big group. Another homey touch is the washer and dryer that’s included in every unit. For children, Smuggler’s Villa offers a playground and everyone is invited to take out one of the rowboats. The unofficial resort motto is "children are accepted, parents are tolerated." Children will find plenty of things to do, including trying to catch the bunnies hopping around all over the grounds.
Built in 1972, Smuggler’s has seen its population change from a majority of fishermen to families looking for a chance to get away from everyday life. The manager helps provide a barrier for guests from the outside world by taking messages and keeping phones out of the rooms. If needed, phone, fax and computer are available in the main office.
Each condo faces the water and the resort’s private marina. A "Smug Cam" has recently been added to the resort’s Website and provides a view of the beach. The pebble beach may offer a rocky stroll, but this side of Orcas is less populated so you may find that that you have the entire beach to yourself. Also fun is the community firepit and sitting area overlooking the beach where guests meet to talk and roast marshmallows together. Some have been coming for 20 years or more and reserve a villa for the same week every summer.
From the Orcas Island ferry landing, drive 9 miles on Orcas Road (Horseshoe Highway)to Eastsound. Turn left onto North Beach Road and follow for a little more than a mile to the road-end and Sunset Road. Smuggler's Villa is on the left.
