Kangaroo House Bed And Breakfast
San Juan County
1459 North Beach Road
Every day Never Closes
Built in 1907, the Kangaroo House Bed and Breakfast is the oldest, continuously operating Bed and Breakfast on Orcas Island. Owners Jill and Charles get a kick out of relating how the B&B got its name. In the 1930s, the home was purchased by Captain Harold Ferris, a steamship captain who’d brought a little kangaroo from Australia with him named Josie.
The Kangaroo House is a casual relaxed place with big Craftsman style furniture that makes you want to curl up by the stone fireplace. Jill and Charles provide a comfortable atmosphere and have taken into consideration many kinds of guests, including those couples on a romantic getaway. As a result, there is something nice for everyone.
Breakfast is served in the dining room overlooking the back deck. The back deck is loaded with bird feeders bringing morning visitors to keep you company while you enjoy Charles’ amazing multi-course gourmet meal.
A little room with games, puzzles, and books -- from Cat in the Hat to Shakespeare—offers entertainment for families and groups, while the secluded garden hot tub provides private relaxation. A helpful notebook provides menus for local restaurants and includes a section for guest comments.
Two suites and three rooms, all with private baths, offer a range of rates and configurations for parties of different sizes. The rates are reasonable and Charles, who’s won awards for his breakfasts in B&B cooking contests, provides a hearty meal to start the day.
The house is located between the north beach of the Island and East Sound. A quick five-minute walk north lands you on the north beach, just perfect to watch the sunrise. A longer twenty to thirty minute walk into East Sound gives you numerous restaurants, shops, and the wonderful Saturday Market.
From the ferry landing, follow Horseshoe Highway to Eastsound. Take a left on North Beach Road in the center of town and head north. The B&B is about a mile ahead on your left.
