Spencer Spit State Park

Center Road
Lopez Island , WA 98261

Every day Dawn - Dusk

This secluded campground should be the first destination for any camper getting off the ferry on Lopez. You’ll find Spencer Spit far away from roads, towns, buildings and houses--past farmer’s fields and grazing cattle to wooded entrance to the park. Thick undergrowth runs throughout most of the park, which provides cover for the many rabbits that scurry away from approaching cars.

Most campsites are very private, recessed into the dense bushes and vines common to Western Washington. Campsites are staggered and separated, beautiful and lush green. There are some RV facilities here, including a trailer dump but most of the spots are better suited for tent and car campers. There are 50 spots total, with some of the best being the hiker/biker spots near the water, accessible only on foot. July and August see the car spots get pretty tight but the hiker/biker ones rarely fill up. There are plenty of day trails that run along the beach and over the cliff, offering great views of the bay.

The day use area is a short walk down the side of the embankment to the beach below. The spit itself is a narrow reach of land that nearly bridges the channel between Lopez and Frost Island. On one side is a sand and gravel beach with "plenty of butter clams", according to the local ranger. Clam digging and crabbing are popular along the spit, but check local regulations and red tide warnings first. On the sheltered side of the spit is a salt march, complete with Herons and other sea birds. A restored log cabin also stands out on the lonely spit, a reminder of the European homesteaders from the turn-of-the-century.

From the ferry landing, head south on Ferry Road for about a mile to Port Stanley Road. Turn left and continue for about 2 miles to Baker Road. Turn left again. The park is about a half-mile ahead on your left. All major arterials on Lopez Island have signs pointing to the island's main attractions, including the park, so use these to your advantage.
