Review

Within its vast boundaries, this popular state park has much to offer visitors to Orcas Island. The 5,252 acres of pristine recreational area that comprise the park opened to the public in 1921 when Robert and Millie Moran donated more than 2,700 acres of land for the purpose of creating the park. In the 1930’s, the Civilian Conservation Core built many of the trails, roads and bridges that are still in use throughout the park.

The multiple campgrounds are a main attraction of the park and offer 136 spots for car and RV campers. North, Midway, Mountain Lake and South are the main campgrounds. Midway is nearest Cascade Lake, the natural freshwater lake, so try for those spots first. The spots fill up quickly in the peak months of July and August, so reservations are a smart idea. Otherwise it’s first-come, first-served. Registration requires a stop at the Ranger’s station at the park’s entrance during daylight hours, so go there first if you’re concerned about finding a space. Most of the campsites are in thick forest affording ample privacy. In addition to the regular camping, there are primitive camp spots for bikers and hikers. Facilities are well kept and modern; campers can enjoy coin-operated hot showers at several of the restrooms at Moran.

Cascade Lake offers plenty of water recreation, including fishing, rowing, canoeing and paddle boating. There are plenty of trout in the lake and intrepid anglers who capitalize on the evening bite have a good chance of having fresh fish for dinner. The lake’s designated swimming area is also a popular spot during the summer months.
